The Faculty of things that can’t be learned (FR~U) is an organization of cultural workers operating in the fields of education and production of contemporary visual arts and culture, with a distinct focus on methodology of research, engagement and collective action in different socio–political and cultural contexts. The idea of the faculty is referring to an educational as well as practical structure, consisting of things/subjects/classes that propose and research new models of teaching and learning, as well as insist on the principle of sharing, collaboration, self-organization and mutual learning. It was created in 2000 as an informal platform of several artists, theatre, visual arts and architecture students and in 2003 it was established as an organization for production of contemporary arts and cultural events.
It builds its form based on two pillars of public programs and one platform:
- FR~U PRODUCTION: This program critically addresses, examines and researches the issues of modernist visual and architectural heritage, aesthetics and policies and its consequences in the world of today. It is manifested through hybrid formats for action (exhibitions, performances, conferences, discussions etc.) produced through engaged dialogue and collaboration between cultural workers and interested groups and individuals.
- FR~U EDUCATION: This program aims at creating open and critical educational practices in the country that stimulate knowledge that is subject to shared effort and exchange instead of being simply acquired or studied. One of the programs is the discursive and educational program for young artists THE PERFECT ARTIST, which focuses on dialogue, exchange of experience and debate, through both practice and theory. The DENES Young Visual Artist Award in Macedonia is also part of the program.
An accompanying activity of both programs is the publishing of books, booklets and newspapers.
3. FR~U PLATFORM: AKTO FESTIVAL FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS FR~U started producing the AKTO Festival in 2006 in Bitola and since then the festival has become a resilient, strong and contextual platform in promoting and producing interdisciplinary critical programs and concepts. It is a festival of contemporary arts, which tries to raise issues relevant not only to the current socio-political and hence artistic reality, but also to stimulate production formats that stir up the status quo. Until its 15th edition the festival took place in August in Bitola and was a parallel event with a subversive as well as an emancipating mission to the events produced by the local municipalities and cultural institutions.
In 2016 and 2017, due to the burning local issues and needs, AKTO re-branded into POP UP AKTO, a temporary concept of producing the festival in other cities in Macedonia. Apart from Bitola, AKTO has so far been produced in Skopje, Tetovo, Shtip, Kochani.

MISSION:
The Organization for Contemporary Art and Culture “Faculty of things that can’t be learned (FR~U)” brings together cultural workers from Macedonia who through their research, discursive and educational programs produce and freely share knowledge in the field of the contemporary visual, socially engaged art, and contribute to its greater recognition, actuality and influence in Macedonian society and internationally.
Regarding the staff size of FR~U, the organization is consisted of 4 people involved in its daily functioning (Filip Jovanovski, artistic director and artist, Ivana Vaseva, program director and curator) and Oliver Musovikj (finance director) and Yana Kastratovic (adiminstration assistant/office Manager) involved in the project “Active Community Spaces for Citizen Changes”. But the team enlarges according to the different projects i.e. depends of the size, duration, scope and needs of the project goals. For example, the thirteenth edition of AKTO Festival for contemporary arts in 2018 consisted of 40 people team.
FR~U was supported by USAID Civil Engagement Project, USAID Macedonian Support Initiative, USAID Civil Society Project (CSP), European Cultural Foundation, Balkans Arts and Culture Fund (BAC), Foundation Open Society – Macedonia (FOSM), Friedrich Ebert Shiftung – Macedonia, Ministry of Culture of Republic of Macedonia, City of Skopje, City of Bitola.

Факултет за работи што не се учат (ФР~У) е организација составена од културни работници, кои дејствуваат во областите едукација и продукција на современи визуелни уметности и култура, со посебен фокус на истражувачка методологија, ангажираност и колективна акција во различни социополитички и културни контексти. Идејата за факултет се однесува на едукативни и на практични структури, содржејќи работи/предмети/предавања кои предлагаат и истражуваат нови модели на предавање и учење, како и инсистирање на принципите на споделување, соработка, самоорганизација и заедничко учење. Формиран е во 2000 година како неформална платформа на повеќе уметници, студенти на драмски, архитектонски студии и визуелни уметности, додека во 2003 година е основан како организација за продукција на современи уметности и културни настани.
Својата форма ја гради на два типа на јавни програми и една платформа:
- ФР~У ПРОДУКЦИЈА: Оваа програма критички ги адресира, преиспитува и истражува прашањата поврзани со модернистичкото визуелно и архитектонско наследство, естетиката и политиките, како и нивните последици во денешниот свет. Се манифестира преку хибридни формати на акција (изложби, перформанси, конференции, дебати и др.) произведени преку активен дијалог и соработка меѓу културните работници и интересните групи и индивидуи.
- ФР~У ЕДУКАЦИЈА: Оваа програма цели кон креирање отворена и критичка едукативна практика во земјата, која ќе го стимулира знаењето стекнато преку заеднички напори и размена, наместо да биде едноставно стекнато или научено. Една од програмите е дискурзивната и едукативна програма за млади уметници – „Совршениот уметник“, која се фокусира на дијалог, размена на искуства и дебата и преку теорија и практика, а дел од таа програма е и наградата „Денес“ за млад визуелен уметник.
Издавањето книги, брошури и весници е придружна дејност на двете програми.
3. ФР~У ПЛАТФОРМА: АКТО ФЕСТИВАЛ ЗА СОВРЕМЕНИ УМЕТНОСТИ – ФР~У почна да го организира фестивалот АКТО во 2006 година во Битола, по што АКТО се разви во отпорна, силна и контекстуална платформа за промоција и креирање интердисциплинарни критички програми и концепти. АКТО е фестивал за современи уметности, кој се обидува да ги отвори не само темите кои се важни за моменталната социјално-политичка и уметничка реалност, туку и да стимулира формати на продукција кои ќе ја размрдаат состојбата на статус кво. Фестивалот се одржува секој август, во Битола, и претставува паралелен настан со субвертирачка и еманципирачка мисија кон настаните кои се организирани од локалните општини и културните институции.
Во 2016 и 2017 година, поради разгорените локални проблеми и потреби, АКТО се ребрендираше во ПОП АП АКТО, привремен концепт за креирање на фестивалот во другите градови во Македонија. Покрај Битола, АКТО досега се организирал во Скопје, Тетово, Штип и во Кочани.
